Mastic Gum: Research-Backed Benefits for Digestive, Oral, and Systemic Health—From Peptic Ulcers and Crohn's Disease to Oral Antimicrobials and Neuroprotection

Mastic gum, derived from the resin of the Mediterranean evergreen shrub Pistacia lentiscus var. Chia, has been revered for its therapeutic effects on the liver, stomach, and intestines since ancient Greek and Roman times [A-5][A-6]. Modern research increasingly validates what traditional healers observed centuries ago: this natural resin possesses remarkable anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antioxidant, and anti-ulcer properties that rival—and in some cases exceed—conventional pharmaceutical interventions [A-5][A-6].

Gastrointestinal and Anti-Ulcer Applications

The most compelling evidence for mastic gum supplementation centers on its capacity to address peptic ulcers and Helicobacter pylori infection. Peptic ulcers occur when H. pylori or certain drugs weaken the protective mucous coating of the stomach and duodenum, allowing stomach acids and pepsin to erode the mucosal wall [A-1]. Rather than resorting to triple antibiotic therapy and proton pump inhibitors—which suppress stomach acid and inadvertently create hospitable environments for H. pylori to thrive—mastic gum offers a natural alternative that supports gut healing and bacterial eradication [A-2].

A four-week pilot study of patients with mild to moderately active Crohn's disease demonstrated that participants receiving six capsules per day of mastic gum (each containing 0.37 grams) experienced significantly decreased Crohn's Disease Activity Index scores alongside significant increases in total antioxidant potential [A-5][A-6]. Post-treatment, patients exhibited significant decreases in interleukin-6, a pro-inflammatory signaling molecule that recruits immune cells and amplifies the inflammatory cascade, as well as C-reactive protein, a surrogate marker for systemic inflammation [A-5][A-6]. Researchers attributed improvements in the Nutritional Risk Index primarily to body weight gain resulting from decreased liquid stool frequency, which enabled better nutrient absorption [A-5][A-6].

Oral Health Benefits

Beyond digestive applications, mastic gum compounds demonstrate potent antimicrobial activity against oral pathogens. European researchers isolated three compounds from mastic gum—24Z-isomasticadienolic acid, oleanolic acid, and oleanonic aldehyde—and tested them against ten representative oral bacterial species plus Candida albicans [A-3]. Among these, oleanolic acid proved most effective against nearly all microorganisms tested, suggesting applications for treating oral problems caused by streptococci and anaerobic oral microorganisms [A-3].

Neuroprotective Implications

Emerging research links H. pylori infection to Alzheimer's disease risk, with a Canadian meta-analysis finding that symptomatic infection increases Alzheimer's risk by 11 percent after age 50 and by 24 percent a decade later [A-2]. Mastic gum appears among well-researched natural options that support gut healing and bacterial eradication, alongside probiotics, Manuka honey, sulforaphane, and berberine [A-2]. This positions mastic gum as a potentially critical intervention for protecting cognitive function through gut-brain axis modulation.

Summary

Practical Usage Recommendations

For raw mastic gum, traditional chewing provides direct oral antimicrobial exposure while gradually releasing beneficial compounds. For supplementation, the research protocol utilized six capsules daily containing 0.37 grams each [A-5][A-6]. Those experiencing chronic indigestion, anemia, or unexplained neurological symptoms should consider testing for H. pylori infection and prioritizing natural interventions before resorting to acid blockers [A-2].
